Clean green transport means around Hue

A visit to Hue City is not complete without drifting on the Huong River to come face to face with the beauty of the imperial land. With an eco-tour along the Huong River by bicycle and kayak, we had a chance to learn more about the daily life of the locals living on the riversides and to admire the simple beauty of Phu Mong-Kim Long Garden, Thien Mu Pagoda and Sinh folk painting village.

Clean green transport means around HueThe tour can be booked at the Hue Festival Service Center under the management of Huong Giang Tourist Company.

Departing at 7:30 a.m. by bicycle for Phu Mong-Kim Long Garden, we savored the lush greenery at either side of our path and the ongoing lullaby sung by the Huong River, as well as Truong Tien Bridge and Ngo Mon Square. Over 6km of pedaling gave us time to consider the Nguyen Dynasty in the cool of morning.

In 30 minutes we were there. The Garden of Eden couldn’t have been much nicer than this. The eye-soothing carpet of green and the comforting scent of native tress in the prime of their lives make the perfect background for the bright colors of the fruits and flowers and the sounds of the birds on the wing. Nature does not provide all the art as here there are samples of man’s creativity carved permanently into stone. Scattered randomly around the garden are many old wooden houses which are worth looking into for the sake of their style.

From the garden we headed for Thien Mu Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Hue City which was built during the Nguyen Dynasty. Located beside the picturesque Huong River, the pagoda adds its considerable charm to this beautiful natural setting.

After discovering the pagoda’s well preserved original architecture with its accompaniment of elegant embellishments and recharging ourselves with the comforting peace of its sanctuary, we folded our limbs into kayaks for a trip along the Huong River to see Sinh folk painting village. Drifting on the river for nearly an hour, we had a chance to join the residents of Hen Islet in their trading at Dong Ba Market and to contemplate the charm of Bao Vinh old city.

We landed at Tien Non Wharf in a peaceful swathe of bamboo covered countryside. To get into the center of the folk painting village, we mounted bicycles again and started out on a tree lined path and pushed on through the shafts of sunlight.

At the village, we visited artist Ky Huu Phuoc at his home. It was educational to see the artisans painting with traditional materials and tools and then to see the local farmers working the rice fields, the vegetable patches and the flower gardens.

Tourism body to select channels for new publicity programs

The executive committee of the National Tourism Action Program will select international television channels this week to promote the culture and tourism image of the country worldwide, an official said.

Tourism body to select channels for new publicity programs Nguyen Van Tinh, Director of the International Cooperation Bureau under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that his bureau would submit plans to make publicity programs on international television channels like CNN, BBC, StarSports and Discovery to the committee. The bureau was planning another program to make similar programs on international magazines, especially those specializing in culture and tourism.

“I think that the committee will choose only one channel due to the high cost. In this year, our bureau is focusing on programs on international magazines because of lower prices than on television channels,” he said.

According to Tinh, after the publicity program on CNN channel in 2007, the bureau has made one more program on the channel last year along with the program on London-based BBC channel and some international magazines.

“We want to continue on CNN and BBC but the advertising prices are higher than last year,” Tinh said.

The bureau has received discounts of around 30 to 40% for programs on CNN and BBC last year. Such channels have quoted prices of more than US$300,000 for each similar program this year.

“We will have a budget of around VND15 billion for all activities in this year so we are giving priority to budget publicity programs like inviting representatives of foreign media to the country (for familiarization trips),” Tinh said.

Of the guests, a group from Channel 4 of the Chinese CCTV channel has visited the country, and a film about Vietnam’s culture and tourism is to be broadcasted on the channel on September 2.

Along with the bureau, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) is also carrying activities to promote the culture and tourism image worldwide.

According to Tinh, his bureau is organizing culture and tourism festivals in foreign countries like the festivals in South Korea and Japan this month, while VNAT is focusing on specific programs for the tourism sector like tourism road shows, and participation in tourism fairs abroad.

VNAT has reported that nearly 351,000 international visitors visited the country last month, bringing the total number of such visitors during January-May to more than 2.1 million, up 32.2% year-on-year.

Aussie's lens captures country's momentum

An exhibition providing a unique view of Vietnam through the lens of an Australian photographer is on view in Hanoi until July 5

Aussie's lens captures country's momentum For Momentum of the River's Flow, Les Horvat, an Australian photographer proposes thirty-four photographs depicting the length and breadth of Vietnam's cultural and historical landscape.

He re-presents spaces charged with historical meaning in their new guises, such as a now overgrown ex-Australian army base thick with foliage and a long disused American radar station.

In another image, past and present fuse, where modern city lights streak across the Municipal Theatre in HCMC. As a foreigner, Horvat attends to the details of particular sites that the locals might ignore in their everyday pursuits.

"Vietnam is special in my imagination. When I was young I thought of Vietnam as a country of mystery and conflict," Horvat said.

His first visit to Vietnam was in 2005. But all the photos in the exhibition were taken in 2006; 2008 and 2009. He spent three to four weeks each time travelling and discovering historic sites.

He sees Vietnam as ever continuously changing and progressing, which is why his multi-angled consideration of historical sites is so central to this exhibition.

The construction of a narrative through a careful post-production edit, acts as another agent in Momentum of the River's Flow. Colour, tone, texture and definition tell their own story, adding to the overall meaning of each photograph and by extension the whole series in the exhibition.

"As an outsider, my viewpoint is obviously subjective and it carries the cultural baggage I bring to the project. Personal as it clearly is, this gaze is nevertheless enacted in the photographs that make up this exhibition," said Horvat.

The photographer spent over 20 years working as an award-winning photographer in a career at the leading edge of commercial, advertising photography in Australia.

He has won numerous awards including the Kodak Professional Photography Achievement Award, Gold and Silver at the Australian Professional Photography Awards, and has been accepted into the Fuji ACMP Collection.

In 1999 Horvat achieved Masters status within the peak photographic industry body, the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.

He has also co-authored a photographic text on digital imaging, published world-wide in four languages, and now up to its third edition.

The exhibition will last through July 5 at the Bui Gallery, 23 Ngo Van So Street, Hanoi.

Hoi Son Pagoda – an architectural relic

Hoi Son Pagoda, also called Khanh Long Pagoda, was established and named after Buddhist monk Dao Thanh Khanh Long who became famous in the late 18th century. It is located on Quit Hill in the present-day Long Binh Ward, District 9 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Hoi Son Pagoda – an architectural relic The book "Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi" (Essays on the Great United Vietnam) written by historians at the time of King Tu Duc (1847-1883) under the Nguyen Dynasty, described the Pagoda's location as follows on the top of the hill, there are many old trees, wild flowers and plants. Along the hillside, there are caves and grottoes and streams, and the houses of local residents. The entire environment is very tranquil."

Since its foundation, Hoi Son Pagoda has seen 13 vergers. The Pagoda's main chamber was restored and expanded, and upgraded with more interesting architectural works built, portraiting the culture and religion of the Viet, Hoa and Kh'mer groups.

The main chamber was built in the Mahayana style and square shape, with brick walls, a Yin-Yang tile roof, and a floor of baked bricks. In the chamber there are statues on display and the principle of "Buddha worshipped in the front, the pagoda's vergers at the back". On the front shrine, there are a set of Tay Phuong Tam Thanh (Tay Phuong Three Buddhas, namely Mahasthanaprata Bodhisattva, Amitabha Buddha and Avalokitesvara). On its two sides are statues of the Guardians, 18 Arhats and Kwan Yin. At the back of the main chamber, there are statues of Most Venerable Dao Thanh Khanh Long and three bonzes, who founded pagodas in other areas. The alters are dedicated to nuns Nhu Thanh and Nhu Tien and the latest verger. The path that leads to the shrine dedicated to Guangong winds up the hill. Although there is some mixtures in its architecture, the prevailing overview of Hoi Son Pagoda is the tranquility of the Mahayana traditional pagodas of the Viet people. The correlation between the Viet and the Kh'mer people's Buddhist religion is reflected in the huge statue sitting in meditation under a parasol decorated with a dragon head (in Kh'mer Pagoda the parasol is decorated with a snake head). Meanwhile at the pagodas of the Hoa ethnic group, the shrine dedicated to Guangong reflects the connection between the religions of the Viet and the Hoa people.

According to the current verger of Hoi Son Pagoda, the Most Venerable Thich Thien Hao, through the ups and downs in its history, some ancient statues were lost, for example the statue of the Sun and the Moon Gods. However, many historical artefacts of religious value have been preserved, one of which is the great panel inscribed with writings by King Khai Dinh (1916-1925) when he visited the pagoda, now on display in the main chamber. There are four banyan trees standing in the courtyard, and a couple of parallel sentences, inscribed with prayers for the country's prosperity and its people's peaceful existence.

Hoi Son Pagoda often holds prayer meetings and ceremonies that involve setting free captured birds and animals, and it takes in social and charitable activities. On the first and fifteenth days of every lunar month, Buddhist believers and tourists from many parts of the country come to Hoi Son Pagoda to sight-see or worship. Due to its beautiful and romantic location, the Pagoda is also a rendezvous for many young couples who visit and pray for good luck and everlasting love.

In 1993 Hoi Son Pagoda was classified as a national historical site.

Nguyen Van Tinh, Director of the bureau, said that the festival would take place in Tokyo from June 22 to 24 and in Seoul from June 25 to 27. There will be music, art, fashion shows, tourism exhibitions, activities and meetings to exchange investment and trade opportunities.

Tourism festivals to be organized in Japan, South Korea The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vietnam Airlines and the tourism departments of HCMC, Hanoi, Danang, Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue will join the events.

“Thirty companies in Vietnam have registered to join the festival. An artist group of 20 people is ready for the program. We will promote culture, tourism as well as investment and trade exchange between Vietnam and the two countries,” Tinh said.

South Korea and Japan were the second and fourth best markets for the country’s tourism in the first four months of this year. Around 178,100 South Koreans visited in the period, up 32.8% year-on-year, and around 148,900 Japanese, up 15.8% year-on-year.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the Japan Association of Travel Agents inked a memorandum of understanding in 2008 to boost tourist exchange.

The association has included Vietnam as one of the destinations of its Visit the World Campaign, a program to increase the number of Japanese outbound travelers to 20 million this year compared to 17.3 million in 2007.

Tinh said the bureau had invited Hanoi, HCMC, Danang, Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue to promote their images in the two countries because these are the favorite destinations of Japanese and South Koreans.

“We will focus on activities to promote sea tourism, festivities of 1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi and tourism in HCMC and the Mekong Delta,” he said, adding the bureau had not made different contents for the two countries because Japanese and South Korean guests have so many similar tastes.

Tinh said the bureau was preparing for a similar festival in China this year.
